The AQUASMART project is about enhancing innovation capacity within the aquaculture sector, by helping companies to transform captured data into knowledge, and sharing this knowledge to improve efficiency, increase profitability and carry out business in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way.

The project is based in the real world, addressing actual problems that aquaculture producer’s face, carrying out work in the areas of data analysis, data exchange between aquaculture companies and its related stakeholders and global knowledge access.

AQUASMART’s objective is to strengthen the competitiveness and growth potential of the aquaculture production companies by:

• providing the necessary tools to turn the large volumes of heterogeneous aquaculture data into knowledge
• enabling companies to access and analyses global open data
• extracting the knowledge from current data and experiences of the sector

In doing so, we will be able to quickly evaluate and identify the best management practices and rapid solutions for problems or issues that arise.

By offering aquaculture production companies these tools to access and share the global open data and putting them in a position to perform strong data analytics in a multilingual, multi-sector and cross-border setting we are strengthening the competitiveness and growth potential of these companies.

On the social level, AQUASMART contributes to the development of highly skilled workforce through on-line training programs. The improvement of the efficiency and profitability of the businesses, together with the reduction of the environmental impact will contribute to the increase of the production and the generation of new jobs in the sector.

The project consortium includes prominent industrial organization’s and research institutes from six countries: Ireland, Israel, Slovenia, Spain, Portugal, and Greece.

Key Objectives

The Objectives of AQUASMART are ambitious, challenging and will seek to bring cutting edge technology closer to the market for use by fish farmers and their supply chain across Europe.

• Obj.1 Technology transfers in multilingual data collection, analytics solutions and services.
• Obj. 2 Implement a State of Art Multilingual Open Data framework that companies can use to seamlessly access global data and take more knowledgeable decisions using multi-lingual information.
• Obj. 3 Promote best practices for aquaculture production management.
• Obj. 4 Develop innovations in the aquaculture sector tackling the new opportunities to access global data.
• Obj. 5 Deliver state of the art services, for seamless access and management of the open data in the cloud, and for the delivery and management of the training activities and material.
• Obj. 6 Develop a training programme and training activities, 1) focusing in the ICT developers, responsible for the development of the adapters between the native data sources and the open big data cloud, and 2) focusing on the stakeholders and end users of the new open big data cloud.
• Obj. 7 Deliver Reference Model for Open Data in Aquaculture.
• Obj. 8 Engage with a cross-sectorial, multi-lingual user community around EU open data, suggesting aquaculture open datasets, and sharing the AQUASMART applications.
• Obj. 9 Develop a Data Management Plan (DMP) for aquaculture industry related open data.
