For the past 15 year, Greek fish farming grew and placed our country at the top as the largest sea fish producing country in the wider Mediterranean region.

The species which dominate the national fish farming production are the sea bream and the sea bass (approximately 92% of the production), with the remaining production consisting mainly of trout, salmon, eel and carp. Specifically regarding the sea bream and sea bass, Greece produces 60% of the total produced quantity of these species among European and Mediterranean countries, exporting them mainly to Italy, Spain, France and the United Kingdom.

There are approximately 370 fish farming units active today in Greece, growing sea bream, sea bass and new species. They belong to 250 companies active in the sector of fish farming. Half of these conduct their activities in prefectures that are close to large urban centre (Athens & Patras).

The Prefecture of Evia has the largest number of operating units and it is followed by the Dodecanese, Aitoloakarnania, Fthiotida, Thesprotia and Attica.

At the same time, the fish farming sector, is often the single activity in challenged, frontier and uninhabited areas, where there is usually no other investment interest, thus contributing to the financial revival and re-activation of the Greek countryside. Distinctive cases are the units which are located a stone's throw away from the border posts in Thesprotia or the fish farms established in barren islands or uninhabited skerries.
